Athian Updates Governance Framework

Updates ensure ongoing rigor of Athian process and claim credibility

At Athian, we regularly review our processes and procedures to ensure due diligence, continuous improvement and alignment with evolving global guidance. Most recently, we updated The Athian Governance Framework (version 1.2 or V1.2) to address frequently asked questions and incorporate our MOU with ANAB (the American National Standards Institute, or ANSI, National Accreditation Board).

The Framework serves as the foundation for all of our work, ensuring the highest level of credibility for the Scope 3 interventions claimed through Athian and protecting our partners from increasing global scrutiny. The following provides an overview of a few of the key updates and what they mean for you.

ANAB Accreditation and ISO Standards

In 2025, Athian entered into an MOU with ANAB, which spells out Athian’s requirement that our third-party verification bodies be accredited in accordance with ISO standards for bodies that validate or verify environmental GHG claims (ISO 14065). ANAB is the largest multi-disciplinary organization of its type in the western hemisphere and it, in turn, distinguishes Athian for being a program that recognizes or requires ANAB’s GHG Accreditation Program

The latest version of Athian’s Governance Framework incorporates the MOU and improves transparency into how Athian complies with these principles.

Alignment with External Standards

V1.2 also spells out Athian’s alignment with other ISO standards and global guidance, such as the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Standard, the Science Based Targets Initiative Corporate Net-Zero Standard and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change values for methane.

Version 1 of Athian’s Governance Framework referenced these standards, but V1.2 embeds and operationalizes these standards within our process and procedures. This is important because by integrating the most current guidance from these well-referenced and respected global bodies, we can provide third-party assurance that claims made through Athian are defensible and compatible with emerging regulatory expectations.

From Program Standards to Formal Governance

Athian’s previous governance document focused on the security and operation of our platform technology, the concepts and definitions underpinning Athian’s approach and high-level governance principles. However, as Athian’s business matures and global standards evolve, it is important to codify the broader scope of standards and procedures we employ. Other areas addressed by V1.2 include the following:

  • Improving the lifecycle and maintenance of protocols, such as guidelines for piloting protocols, conducting an annual review by Athian’s Scientific Advisory Board and specifying protocol retirement procedures.
  • Adding requirements for verification, including reviewer and reporting requirements and a materiality threshold.
  • Defining co-claiming and clarifying registry rules and logic to protect against double issuance or claiming.
  • Including a process for submitting and investigating complaints and appeals consistent with other mature, high-integrity environmental programs.

In total, the more comprehensive nature of version V1.2 makes it more suitable for regulators, auditors and other external scrutiny, ensuring our partners can have confidence in the rigor of the science, verification and transparency behind Athian’s work.
